Idea General

Ludovico Ariosto imaginó que un paladín descubre en la luna todo lo que se pierde en la tierra: las lágrimas y los suspiros de los amantes, el tiempo malgastado en el juego, los proyectos inútiles y los anhelos no saciados.

Atlas soportando el peso del mundo es una instalación construida a partir de libros. Una base de atlas geográficos sostiene una pila de volúmenes cuyos títulos comienzan o contienen la expresión “el peso de…”.

La obra propone una inversión del mito: ya no es Atlas quien carga el mundo, sino el mundo el que sostiene a quienes lo habitan. Los atlas —tradicionalmente asociados al conocimiento, la orientación y la representación total del territorio— se convierten en soporte físico de una acumulación de pesos simbólicos: la memoria, la culpa, la verdad, el amor, el pasado, la responsabilidad.

Cada libro introduce una carga distinta. El conocimiento aparece no como alivio, sino como peso. Medidos y apilados, estos volúmenes no describen el mundo exterior sino una cartografía interior: los afectos, los miedos, las vanidades. La precisión con la que se registran los gramos de cada libro tensiona la idea de objetividad.
¿Qué gravedad tienen las palabras?

La obra entiende el atlas no como un sistema cerrado, sino como un dispositivo abierto y mutable. La colección puede crecer, reordenarse, cambiar de idioma o de contexto, modificándose en cada versión de este work in progress.

General Idea

Ludovico Ariosto imagined that a paladin discovers on the moon everything that is lost on earth: the tears and sighs of lovers, time wasted in games, useless projects and unsatisfied longings.

Atlas Supporting the Weight of the World is an installation built from books.
A base of world atlases supports a stack of volumes whose titles begin with or contain the expression “the weight of…”.

The work proposes an inversion of the myth: it is no longer Atlas who carries the world, but the world that sustains those who inhabit it. Atlases—traditionally associated with knowledge, orientation, and the total representation of territory—become the physical support for an accumulation of symbolic weights: memory, guilt, truth, love, the past, responsibility.

Each book introduces a different load. Knowledge appears not as relief, but as weight. Measured and stacked, these volumes do not describe the external world but an interior cartography: affects, fears, vanities. The precision with which each book’s weight is recorded puts the idea of objectivity under tension.
What gravity do words have?

The work understands the atlas not as a closed system, but as an open and mutable device. The collection can grow, be rearranged, change language or context, transforming itself with each new version of this work in progress.
